FOLGARIA

Folgaria - Campionati Mondiali Studenteschi Sci ISF 2010The enchanting Folgaria Upland stretches over an area of 72.8 sq km on the mountains of south western Trentino and has 3100 inhabitants altogether. About a thousand live in the chief town, while the others are distributed among the seven villages of Costa, Serrada, Guardia, Mezzomonte, San Sebastiano, Carbonare and Nosellari, which once made up the Magnifica Comunità, honorary title which dates back to a century-long tradition of autonomy and independence. In the 12th century, Folgaria was already a free municipality, with its own democratic and representative bodies and remained so until the beginnings of the 19th century. Then the Austrian domination period started and, after the First World War, it became Italian.
Today Folgaria is one of the most important tourist destinations of the Alps and of Trentino. Tourism growth has led to the creation of quality accommodation and high level sports facilities in Folgaria Upland area: 9-hole golf course, multi-purpose indoor stadium, basketball field, ice rink, football field and a Nordic Walking Park. As to winter tourism, the upland offers a 65-km-long skiing carousel (Carosello Ski Folgaria) of linked slopes, with artificial snow making systems and served by 4-seat chairlifts. For Nordic skiing lovers, Folgaria has two cross-country centres: Fort Cherle Centre (1400 metres high) and the larger Passo Coe cross-country centre (1600 metres high). Other important yearly events are Alpine and Nordic skiing races, the Carnevale d'Autore of Serrada, the Gran Bike and Folgaria Megabike, football teams’ summer training (the last one was the Turin team), the events organized in memory of the Great War as well as the concerts of the Sounds of the Dolomites and gastronomic and traditional events.

LAVARONE

Lavarone - Campionati Mondiali Studenteschi Sci ISF 2010Located on the Plateau of the Seven Municipalities, Lavarone is surrounded by the Val di Centa, Val di Brenta and Val d'Astico. Among the spectacular mountains surrounding the upland, one can pinpoint north the Becco di Filadonna (2150 metres), east Cima Vezzena (1908 metres) while south-west one can notice Cima Dante or “Spiz di Tonezza” and south-east Verena.
A wonderful natural environment with woods, fields and pastures as well as a splendid lake with a bathing area, the traces of the Great War with Fort Belvedere Gshwent Museum (not to be missed), a well equipped sports centre and a skiing carousel starting from Bertoldi and extending, with artificial snow-making system, as far as Vezzena Pass (18 km of ski slopes). As well as this there are natural mountain bike courses, cross-country tracks (5, 12 and 18 km long), snowshoe trails and many walks for all tourists and mountain lovers. Noteworthy is the cross-country centre Millegrobbe, a track with artificial snow-making system and connection with Campolongo (Vicenza).
Lavarone proposes a rich calendar of cultural, sports and entertainment events such as the week of psychoanalytic studies dedicated to Sigmund Freud, famous guest in Lavarone at the beginning of the century, and the presentation of books in August. Sport is well represented by Millegrobbe, the only cross-country skiing race in legs in Italy and a similar competition for mountain bikes “100 km of the forts”. Minor events and events dedicated to the young are “Camminalago”, “Cappella in festa” and “Mille Vòlti” in the Gionghi square.

LUSERNA

Luserna - Campionati Mondiali Studenteschi Sci ISF 2010Luserna (in Cimbrian Lusérn) is a charming hamlet situated on the upland stretching from Lavarone and Vezzena pastures and Asiago at a height of 1300 metres.
The special feature of the village is its Cimbrian language, an ancient Bavarian language spoken by 90% of the population. Thus, you must not be surprised if locals will say «Bolkhent atz Lusérn!» (“Welcome to Luserna!”). For this purpose there is a Cimbrian Institute which safeguards and promotes this ancient language.
Luserna is characterized by a rich and wide historical and cultural offer. The driving force of these initiatives is the Documentation Centre Lusern, which serves also as Tourist Office and museum.
This year’s exhibition “The hunter of the Alps. From predator to manager”, will be open until 2 November and then from 26 December 2009 to 6 January 2010. The visitor will be able to visit some rooms dedicated to the history of the Cimbrian community, the Great War period and the history of settlements in the Bronze Age.
In the village centre there are the Museum House and the picture-gallery dedicated to artist Rheo Martin Pedrazza. Luserna is also surrounded by a beautiful natural environment: one of the most famous paths is the Cimbrian Path of Imagination, as well as the Luserna Fort, a First World War Austro-Hungarian fortress.
