Campionati Mondiali Studenteschi Sci ISF 2010

Deutschland über alles in slalom

Germany dominates in the Special Slalom on the Martinella slope in Fondo
Grande with Marlene Schmotz from Berchtesgaden and Sebastian Holzmann from
Oberstdorf. Cloudy day with icy snow for the students of the delegations in Ski
World Schools' Championship.

The competition started at 9 o'clock with the first run of category 2 girls. Girls fought on the slope and clocked excellent times but not good enough to overcome Marlene Schmotz result, at 45.55 in the first run.
Then followed the first run of category 2 boys in which many athletes went off course. Sebastian Holzmann managed to reach the best result with 44.48 seconds.
In the second run of the race, at 11.30 am, the course was set again by the Students' Staff with more angled sections than the previous run, especially the gates towards the end. Athletes did their best and bettered their time. Regina Maierand and Bozana Maksic, both from Austria, struggled hard to reach Marlene, first with a final time of 1'32.49. Regina, second in the results with 1'35.77, only 18/100 ahead of Bozana, thanks to her excellent first run. "It was a high speed course but I did a great race. I’ve already taken part in important races, but never like this one. For example I won the Topolino Trophy”, said Marlene. A lot of disappointment in the boy's category because many went off the course. Only few athletes were able to compete with the German Sebastian,
first clocking a final time of 1'30.21, followed by French Jonas Fabre with 1'30.45 and Austrian David Neuhasue at 42/100 adrift “Congratulations to Sebastian, he's very strong. But I'm satisfied with my race. All my training in
Val d'Isere turned out to be very useful!” said French Jonas. “It's not the first time for me in a Ski World Schools' Championship. I started skiing when I was 5 in Oberstdorf. I'm very happy with my victory”. Said Sebastian. Italian athletes participated in this race too. The girls of Ortisei did a good performance, and lie in the middle of the result list. Trentino boys are instead very disappointed because they didn't make it in the standings except
for Francesco Cristoforetti 26th. Athletes from Abruzzo raced for fun because the slopes here are much more difficult than those they are use to train on.
