Ski World Schools' Championship
The Ski World Schools’ Championship is a biennial sporting competition organized by the International School Sport Federation (ISF), awarding world titles in the different Alpine and Nordic skiing techniques. Young students from all over the world take part in this event and compete in teams so as to clinch the title of Ski World Champion.
Every two years, ISF assesses the bids of the countries willing to play host to the competitions and entrusts the organization of the event to the country that submitted the most interesting and sound project.
In the past, this important event was held only three times on our peninsula: in 1977 and in 1983 in Cortina and, more recently, in 1995 in Tarvisio.
The ISF has entrusted the 2010 championship to Italy.
The Italian Ministry for Education, University and Research after assessing the bids presented entrusted the organization of this important event to the Trentino region, Folgaria, Lavarone and Luserna in particular.
This nomination was officially announced during a press conference held in Soelden, at the 2008/2009 Ski World Cup opening. The star of the event was Trentine skier Davide Simoncelli.
For Trentino region this is the first-ever experience concerning world schools’ events.
Folgaria, Lavarone and Luserna are a ski resort suitable to play such an important role. All this because the area offers training and race tracks up to the situation in both Alpine and Nordic skiing as well as high quality accommodation and hospitality. In addition to this, it has also proven successful in the organization of national and international events. Folgaria, Lavarone and Luserna have won over many other resorts willing to host the event.
A short history
The Trentino tourist resort stands among the great names of the host venues.
The World Championship started in 1973 and has been held in different sites, most of which have played host to F.I.S. World Cup races or Nordic skiing events.
Precisely: 2008 Alpe d’Huez (France); 2007 Andorra; 2005 Gallivare (Sweden); 2003 Schladming (Austria); 2001 Pralognan (France); 1999 Jesenik (Czech Republic); 1997 Garmich-Partenkirchen (Germany); 1995 Tarvisio (Italy); 1993 Collingwood (Canada); 1991 Val Cenis (France); 1989 Ostersund (Sweden); 1987 Saalfelden (Austria); 1985 Sunne (Sweden); 1983 Cortina (Italy); 1981 Saalfelden (Austria); 1979 Kuusamo (Finland); 1977 Cortina (Italy); 1975 Chamonix (France); 1973 Schladming (Austria).
All these resorts have been in World Cup Alpine and Nordic skiing calendars for years and are thus the world’s top organizing teams of winter sports. The accession of Folgaria, Lavarone and Luserna seals the great qualitative leap made into the world of sports.
